In his speech, Representative Choi reflected on how political unrest in 1980s Korea led many top students to pursue careers in the arts instead of law or politics, laying the foundation for Korea’s media boom after 2000. He emphasized that the Korean Wave’s success was no accident but the result of deliberate national policies, cultural strategies, and global outreach.
The lecture explored Korea’s “nation-building through culture” policies, robust support for entertainment industries, and its idol training systems. Representative Choi also discussed the pivotal role of digital platforms like Netflix and YouTube in spreading Korean content globally, along with the industry’s efforts in localization and emotional storytelling that resonate across cultures.
Highlighting landmark works such as Winter Sonata, Gangnam Style, Parasite, and Squid Game, Representative Choi showcased how Korean pop culture has evolved into a global phenomenon. Students expressed that the event gave them new insights into both Korean culture and the dynamics of the global entertainment industry.
