The College of Humanities of Fo Guang University originally had the Department of Chinese Literature and Applied Studies, the Department of History, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, and the Institute of Religious Studies. In order to respond to the trend of the times and the need for overall adjustments to colleges and departments, a merger plan was launched in the 113th academic year. This project involves the Department of Chinese Literature and Applied Studies and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The merged department is named the Department of Languages and Literatures and adopts admissions grouping.
The integrated "Department of Language and Literature" will combine the ancient and modern literature capabilities, classics and images, creative publishing, and industrial cooperation experience of the Chinese Department with the international language cross-domain advantages of the Foreign Languages and Literature Department, such as English, Japanese, Korean, etc., to help promote the global cross-domain development of the language, literature, and culture fields of our college. This move will also be more attractive and will attract students who are adapting to current trends to study here, making the college more competitive. Overall, this reorganization of departments and institutes is expected to enable the school to respond more flexibly to the challenges of modern education while providing students with more diverse learning opportunities.
The Department of Language and Literature adheres to the school motto of Fo Guang University, "Righteousness, Path and Compassion" as given by Master Hsing Yun. Under the concept of "holistic education, warm campus, and lifelong learning", it develops the overall process with the goal and policy of inheriting the past and ushering in the future in the professionalization of teaching and research, the digitization of information technology, the integration of multiple cultures and international education.
